Langhe is a territorial Denomination, a category based on careful selection of grapes in the vineyard. For example, a Nebbiolo vineyard that produces grapes for the production of Barolo, Barbaresco, Roero and Nebbiolo d’Alba, will also produce grapes for Langhe Nebbiolo Doc, that are separated from the others and vinified differently.
Thanks to their high quality, Langhe Doc wines have earned an important place on the world market. In addition, the Langhe Denomination allows wines produced with indigenous grapes, such as Favorita and Freisa, or with international varieties, such as Chardonnay and Cabernet (if the modification to the Disciplinary body is accepted) to display a Denomination of Origin on their labels.
Within the Langhe category, two wines require further explanation: these are the wines that do not carry a mention of vine type on the label, Langhe rosso and Langhe bianco. These can be produced with a single variety of grape or from a blend of varieties cultivated in the area. This is a category that has greatly stimulated the imagination of the area’s producers, resulting in the invention of a variety of ‘estate wines’ with infinite commercial possibilities.
The Langhe Denomination represents the variety and liveliness of this area’s viticulture with its grand assortment of vines and varietals. The Langa is also a region with a truly amazing variety of micro-climates and soils, including marl, clay and sand, or a mixture of all types: ‘Langhe Doc’, since 1994, has been uniting the area’s incredible diversities.
